Construction look ahead: 2024

Continuing Activity

Anticipated activities

  • Work includes installing utilities, paving the pedestrian space, building the protected bike facility, landscaping and art installation. 

Construction details

  • Work will be from Summer 2022 to Late 2024. 
  • Work will be west of Alaskan Way between Yesler Way and Pike St. 
  • Pedestrian access will be maintained to all businesses and residences.  
  • Driveway access to all buildings will be maintained. 
  • Daytime work, typically 7 AM to 5 PM Monday through Friday. 
  • Expect construction equipment and vehicles moving in and out of the work zone.   
  • Construction trucks and equipment may be noisy.

  • Constructing seismic improvements 
  • Improvements to enhance access, safety, views and flexible use of the space. 
  • Work will occur at Pier 58 – between Pier 57 (Miner’s Landing + the Great Wheel) and Pier 59 (the Seattle Aquarium) 
  • Pile driving will be completed by late winter 2024 

Construction details

  • Work will primarily be from the waterside with minimal impacts to people walking along the waterfront. 
  • Work hours are generally from 6:30 AM to 3 PM 
  • The new pier is expected to open in 2025

Anticipated activities

  • The expansion includes a new building, the Ocean Pavilion; a west-end renovation of Pier 59; a renovation and expansion of Pier 60; and seamless connections to a greatly improved public waterfront. 

Construction details

  • The improvements started in 2020 and is anticipated to be complete by 2024  
  • Regular work hours Monday through Friday from 7 AM to 5 PM.   
  • Pedestrian access maintained at all times on the west side of Alaskan Way

  • Overlook Walk, located between the Seattle Aquarium and Pike Place Market, is a key connection between the waterfront and downtown and will become a focal point for the new waterfront. 

Construction details

  • Construction began in summer of 2022 and is anticipated to be completed in early 2025.  
  • Work areas are between Alaskan Way at Pike St and Elliott Way near Pine St  
  • Typical work hours are 7 AM to 5 PM Monday through Friday, with work starting at 6 AM when needed and communicated to neighbors in advance 
  • Pedestrian access below Overlook Walk will be maintained on the west side

  • Constructing improvements on four east-west streets in the heart of Pioneer Square. The changes will prioritize pedestrians, improve sidewalks, and increase greenery.  

Construction details

  • Construction is expected to begin in late 2023 and take about a year to complete.  
  • Work areas are on S Washington, S Main, King and Yesler streets between 2nd Ave and Alaskan Way.  
  • Access to businesses and residences will be maintained at all times.

Anticipated activities

  • Pike Pine Streetscape and Bicycle Improvements (a part of the Downtown Seattle Association’s Pike Pine Renaissance program) will provide a vibrant pedestrian experience on Pike and Pine streets between Capitol Hill and the Pike Place Market, with connections to the new waterfront.  

Construction details

  • Construction began in early 2023 and is anticipated to be complete in late 2024.  
  • Work areas are on Pike and Pine streets, from 1st Ave to Bellevue Ave. 
  • Access to all properties on both Pike and Pine streets, including businesses and residences, will be maintained during construction work. Detour signage will direct pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers when necessary.   
  • Work hours typically Monday through Friday, 7 AM to 5 PM.  
  • Weekend work is planned at intersections; details to be communicated in advance through the weekly construction emails.

  • Construct improved connections from Bell St to the waterfront, specifically from 1st Ave to Elliott Ave. 
  • Bell St, between 1st Ave and Elliott Ave, will become a one-way road, eastbound between Elliott and Western avenues, and westbound between Western and 1st avenues

  • Construction is expected to begin in 2024 and take approximately a year to complete.  
  • Access to businesses and residences will be maintained at all times.
